Bulk materials are measured by cubic yard or ton. A cubic yard fills a cube 3 x 3 x 3 feet, so the ordering step is to turn your project area into one of those units. These calculators handle that for 24 specific products, using each material's actual weight per cubic yard. Shredded mulch weighs around 600 lb per yard, while crusher run weighs 3,000 lb per yard. The cube is the same size, but one weighs five times more, so material-specific calculations give a different tonnage result than a general aggregate calculator.

Select a material

Calculation steps

Start by finding square footage: multiply the length and width in feet. Convert depth to feet by dividing inches by 12, then multiply by the area for cubic feet. Divide that result by 27 to find cubic yards, then use the material density to calculate tons.

Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)

An accurate depth matters because it can change the total substantially. A 10 x 10 patio at 2 inches requires half the stone needed for that same patio at 4 inches. If the right depth is unclear, refer first to the project depth listed on the material page.

Find the right material

  • For a driveway or parking pad, calculate the lower crusher run or road base layer separately from the driveway gravel or #57 stone finish.
  • Use clean #57 or drain rock at 12 inches or more for standing water, a wet trench, or a French drain.
  • Use shredded mulch in planted areas, or choose river rock for borders that do not require regular replacement.
  • For sparse grass or bare ground, spread 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil, followed by seed or sod.
  • When filling a hole or raising the grade, use fill dirt for the supporting layer. Use topsoil only for the upper 4 to 6 inches.
  • A paver patio needs a compacted base and an even 1 inch layer of bedding sand. The Paver Base and Paver Sand calculators measure these layers separately.
  • Playground fall zones: maintain pea gravel at a depth of 9 to 12 inches.
  • For an eroding shoreline or slope, install riprap over fabric in layers of 12 inches or more.

Common ordering questions

What calculator do I need?
Choose the calculator tied to the material you plan to purchase because material weights differ. For the same path, enter matching measurements for pea gravel and river rock. Cubic volume is unchanged, while tonnage and price differ.
Should I buy by cubic yard or ton?
Follow the unit listed on the product page. Gravel and stone use tons, while mulch and soils use yards. Each calculator provides both figures, without manual conversion.
How close are calculator estimates?
Calculations are precise, while field conditions can vary. Moisture, compaction, and an irregular subgrade may shift actual material needs by roughly 10 to 15%, so estimates appear as a range and crushed materials include a small default allowance. Check measurements again before ordering.
Can one delivery contain multiple materials?
Yes. For combinations such as road base with surface gravel, fill dirt with topsoil, or mulch with edging rock, use a separate calculator for each layer and place the products in one order. Delivery stays free.
Are all calculator materials sold here?
Yes, all 24 materials are included. Each calculation connects directly to the corresponding product page with the calculated quantity.
