Loose crusher run shrinks 10-15% as it compacts. Ordering only to the measured depth can leave the finished base half an inch short, so this calculator starts with a +10% allowance. It is also called crush and run or 2 inch minus on some tickets. Each name describes crushed stone with fines retained, at about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, forming a surface tires do not easily push aside.

Order for compacted depth

  1. Calculate the footprint in feet using lane length times width, or the dimensions of the pad.
  2. Choose the required finished compacted depth: 4 inches for paths and pavers, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 for trucks.
  3. Convert cubic feet to yards by dividing by 27, then use x 1.5 for tons. Leave the +10% selected. Depth specifications apply after rolling.
Tons = (Area sq ft × Compacted depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × 1.5 × 1.10

Uses and limits

  • Driveway base calls for 4-6 inches after compaction. Add 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel above it as the travel layer.
  • For budget rural lanes, crusher run by itself can form a usable driving surface. Plan on dust during summer and regrading every 2-4 years.
  • For paver and slab bases, compact 4 inches in 2-inch lifts. The Paver Base Calculator covers the entire paver build-up.
  • For shed and hot-tub pads, place 4 inches on stripped ground or 6 where soil is soft.
  • Do not put it in a French drain. The fines that help it bind also retain water. Use clean #57 or drain rock where drainage is needed.

Example: 20 x 10 parking pad

Two hundred square feet at 4 inches compacted works out to 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. Order 4 tons with the allowance. Spread and compact half the material, then repeat with the rest. Two 2-inch lifts last years longer than one 4-inch pour. Renting a plate compactor for the afternoon costs less than the first pothole repair. Skipped compaction can show in the ruts by the second delivery.

Delivery details

  • Bring the base and surface stone in one delivery to keep the project on schedule. Delivery is free either way.
  • Start the pile at the far end, then spread back toward it. For large pads, working downhill beats uphill by a full day.
  • Lightly mist each lift before you compact it. Wet crusher run locks more tightly than dry material.
  • Set aside a wheelbarrow-load for repairs. Road crews use the same material for potholes, and it can patch your own later.

How pricing works

Crusher run comes from the crusher with its fines still included instead of being washed and sorted. The +10% allowance on a 4-ton order can prevent a separate half-ton delivery. Review the Crusher Run product page for the per-ton price, compare Road Base, then order both driveway layers in one free delivery.

Crusher run and crush and run FAQs

How much crusher run is needed for a driveway?
Calculate lane area first. Apply a compacted depth of 4-6 inches, convert at 1.5 tons per yard, and include 10%. At 4 inches, a 50 x 10 ft lane needs roughly 10 tons delivered.
What does a yard of crusher run weigh?
A cubic yard is about 3,000 lb, or 1.5 tons, and weighs somewhat more after rain. Its fines fill voids between the stones, making it heavier than clean gravel.
How does crusher run differ from gravel?
Crusher run retains stone dust, while gravel such as #57 is screened clean. The dust lets it compact firmly for bases. Clean stone remains loose for drainage and surface layers. A driveway uses them in that order.
Are crush and run and crusher run the same?
These are regional names for the same material. Crusher run and 2 inch minus are in the same product family. Ordering under either name brings the same blend.
Can crusher run serve as the top surface?
For rural and low-traffic drives, yes. It compacts into a firm crust that handles weather, but dry periods cause dust and it needs regrading every few years. A later 2 inches topping of #57 addresses both.
How much will crusher run compact?
Ten to fifteen percent. A 4-inch loose layer compacts to about 3.5 inches. That is why the calculator turns its allowance on by default and specifications use compacted depth.
