Everything You Need to Know About RipRap
Size and Grading

Old Lake Bonneville clay along the Wasatch Front can swell when snowmelt arrives, while gravel benches can move water through quickly. Both conditions can direct runoff toward an exposed bank, slope, or drainage channel. RipRap provides heavy stone for protecting those surfaces where flowing water could erode the soil.
Apply RipRap over the section of shoreline, channel, culvert outlet, or slope that carries the water. This gives runoff a stone-armored surface instead of bare ground to work against. Across Utah Valley, Cache Valley, and other areas affected by spring melt, that placement is useful where water gathers and follows a defined route downhill.
