Everything You Need to Know About Railroad Ballast

Beneath a detached garage pad on the Wasatch Front, snowmelt can wet old lakebed clay and affect the ground supporting the work. Railroad Ballast uses angular stone to form an open course that bears load without trapping water in the layer. It is also suited to rail track and areas used by heavy equipment.
Utah benches may have gravelly ground that drains quickly, so water movement still needs consideration around the project. Keep Railroad Ballast in the drainage-focused foundation course instead of asking it to serve as a fine compacted finish. Where a tighter layer belongs in the design, use a material made to compact in that position. That placement separates the open stone function from the finished base function.
