Everything You Need to Know About Crushed Concrete

Recycled crushed concrete

The fractured faces of Crushed Concrete leave a pale gray, practical-looking material that may include visible aggregate from the original slab. It is generally selected for the structural work beneath a driveway or detached-garage pad rather than for a finished landscape surface. Angular pieces and fines form a dense base after proper compaction, giving traffic a steadier surface above.

Along the Wasatch Front, snowmelt can soften clay while bench gravel sheds water quickly. Establish the intended grade before installing the base so runoff is directed away from the traveled area. When Crushed Concrete is dry and dusty, a modest amount of water can help during rolling or tamping. Compaction brings the fine material into the spaces between larger fragments and lets their angular faces bear together. For snowmelt drainage or a clean stone zone, select washed open stone instead.

Common Uses

Driveway & Parking Pad Base

For new driveways, rebuilt driveways, and parking pads, crushed concrete provides a supporting layer. Install and compact it in lifts to create a traffic-bearing foundation that helps reduce potholes and ruts. It can remain as the driving surface, or you can cover it with driveway gravel for a more finished appearance.

Road Base & Access Roads

For private roads, farm lanes, equipment yards, and construction entrances, crushed concrete can serve as a base layer. It handles heavy trucks and machinery while creating an all-weather surface for work after rain.

Sub-Base for Patios, Walkways & Pads

Place and compact crushed concrete below pavers, walkways, sheds, and hot tub pads to distribute weight and support a level finish. The coarse aggregate moves water through more readily than native clay, helping limit water beneath the finished surface. Put down a bedding layer of sand or screenings before setting pavers.

Fill & Backfill

Use crushed concrete as structural fill to raise low areas, increase grade, or backfill around footings and behind retaining walls. Its angular particles lock together after compaction, creating a stable fill that is less prone to washing away or becoming muddy than soil fill.

Why Choose Crushed Concrete

Lower Cost Than Quarried Base

Since it is recycled material, crushed concrete generally has a lower per-ton cost than crushed stone base. It is priced below driveway gravel at every order size, which can reduce costs on large driveways and access roads.

Dense, Interlocking Base

Compaction causes the angular fragments and fines to lock together. As the layer settles, old cement paste can also help it bind. Use a roller or plate compactor to create a dense base that helps resist shifting, rutting, and washouts.

Recycled Material

Crushed concrete puts demolished concrete back into use as base material beneath driveways and roads.

Versatile Base and Fill

Use the same material for driveway and parking pad bases, access roads, patio and shed sub-base, or general fill. A single delivery can cover much of the groundwork for one project.
